The Fiji Junior Bula Boys are putting the finishing touches to their preparations in Papua New Guinea ahead of the start of the OFC Under-16 Men’s Championship, with a place at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup 2027 firmly in their sights.

The national side will open its Group A campaign against New Caledonia on Sunday before taking on Samoa next Wednesday. Fiji will then conclude the group stage against host nation Papua New Guinea three days later.

The regional tournament carries extra significance this year, with the top three teams securing qualification to the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar in 2027.

Fiji will be aiming to qualify for the global showpiece for a third time, having previously earned two appearances through strong performance at the OFC U16 Championship.

Head coach Sunil Kumar will once again lead the Junior Bula Boys after successfully guiding Fiji to qualification in the previous two U16 campaigns. His experience is expected to play a key role as the young side prepares to face some of Oceania’s best emerging talent.

The squad features a blend of promising players selected across Fiji, including two New Zealand-based players identified during last year’s Pacific Community Cup in New Zealand, highlighting Fiji Football Association’s continued efforts to strengthen its youth development program both locally and abroad.

Defending champions New Zealand headline Group B alongside Solomon Islands, Tahiti and the qualifying winner, Vanuatu, with another competitive tournament expected across both pools.

With only three World Cup places available, every group match will carry significant importance as teams battle for progression to the knockout stages and a chance to secure qualification.

For the Junior Bula Boys, the opening match against New Caledonia presents an opportunity to build early momentum and lay a strong foundation for the remainder of the tournament.

A positive start could prove crucial as Fiji looks to continue its proud record at youth level and take another step towards returning to football’s biggest stage at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.
