THE Ministry of Education’s Library Services department received a surprise gifts on Monday at their office in Nasese yesterday.
Former national judo rep Josateki Naulu, now a judo coach and lecturer at the Ryutsu Keizai University in Japan, and judoka Tevita Takayawa on behalf of the Oceania Sports Support Organisation showed up at the office unannounced with over 1000 books and novels to give towards classrooms all around the nation.
“Reading is vital in a child’s learning,” said principal education officer Aminio Kaivuaqava.
“A student needs to read and comprehend what is being read to fully understand the story.”
Kaivuaqava commended the gifts saying it was an important addition to the library.
“They brought books given by nearby elementary schools in the area where they are based in Japan,” he said.
“The books are to be distributed to our schools as they thought of our children and especially in improving their reading skills or literacy rate, which is an issue nationwide.”
A range of reading books were provided for children as well as novels for senior students and above.
Tevita Takayawa said they intended it as a surprise and wish they had more to offer. “It is a gift from OSSO to the children of Fiji and we know it will be put to good use.
