Jobs for graduates

A report (FT 19/10) says Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Minister Jone Usamate commended the Fiji National University for continuing to provide productive workers who enter the country’s workforce.

Speaking at the FNU inaugural alumni homecoming dinner, Mr Usamate said the institution played an important role in Fiji’s labour industry.

I also thank FNU.

Furthermore, is there any statistics that tell us how many people have graduated and how many have found jobs?

Here is a real life story.

A few friends went to a school in Lautoka and having passed Form 7, a few of them went on to university.

All had moved to Suva and during the university breaks they would go and work part time wherever they could.

One of them decided to carry on working because it paid $300 a week.

This friend then decided to also do her degree program at USP while holding on to the job.

It was a trying time for her, balancing her job, studies and meeting her friends.

She still has her job and will soon graduate.

Two friends have since graduated, but can’t find a job.

Another two have found jobs but not in their field of study.

Interestingly the one who kept her job earns more than the full degree holders

Interesting.

But this would be a good topic to do a survey on.

What say?
