Prime Minister and Minister for iTaukei Affairs Voreqe Bainimarama has accused Opposition member of Parliament Anare Jale for being bitter about his lost bid to become chairman of the Lau Provincial Council.

Responding to questions from Mr Jale yesterday on whether there were reconsiderations for the provincial councils to appoint respective chairpersons, Mr Bainimarama said chairpersons were dictated by amendments to the iTaukei Affairs Regulations 1996.

“We appoint a chairperson based on their ties to the province, their ability to navigate today’s economic landscape, and their potential to bring prosperity and accountability to the communities they preside over,” he said.

“We will continue filling the role of provincial council chairpersons with candidates who will act not with self-interest, but in the interest of the iTaukei people and communities they serve.”

Mr Bainimarama said members of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) needed to attend budget workshops they were invited to.

He further questioned SODELPA’s leadership saying it was not clear who led the party.
