The Suva Magistrate’s Court has jailed a man for two years for stealing a gold chain worth $6000 in broad daylight in Suva City.
Jone Rasi was convicted of a count of robbery committed on March 21, 2026, where he grabbed a gold chain from a woman’s neck while she was walking with her daughter. He later sold the chain in Nausori for $4000.
Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne refused to suspend the 35-year-old’s sentence because he was already serving a 20-month sentence for a near-identical offence committed on March 7, 2026.
In that incident, he stole a gold chain worth $23,000, in Suva, and sold it for $6800 to another individual.
Mr Somaratne said Rasi’s conduct demonstrated a clear disregard for the law and posed a continuing threat to law-abiding citizens of Fiji.
Rasi will be eligible for parole after serving 18 months of his head sentence.
