A man was sentenced to seven months imprisonment for violently assaulting his wife after demanding money, meant for their sick baby’s hospital visit, to buy alcohol.
The 34-year-old was convicted of assault after pleading guilty before Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi.
The court heard that on June 11 this year, the man was drinking alcohol at home with friends when his wife informed him that their youngest child was sick. But the man, who was intoxicated at that time, demanded money to buy more alcohol.
After an argument ensued over prioritising alcohol over their sick child, his wife handed him $100 intended for taking their son to the hospital. He instead entered a vehicle with another individual.
When questioned by his wife, the man pushed her aside and repeatedly punched her. Upon returning home, he continued the assault by punching her, throwing her against a wall, choking her, and directing vulgar language at her.
The man was ordered to serve three months in jail, with the remaining four months suspended for three years.
The court also issued a final Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) to protect the complainant.
