A LABASA businessman has started constructing a much-needed bypass road in the town.
The suggestion of a bypass, which has been a topic of discussion for years, was initially proposed by the Government to ease traffic congestion.
However, despite repeated announcements, no progress has been made and it prompted Edwin Chand to take up the project himself.
Mr Chand is funding the project although he did not to reveal the cost to this newspaper.
He declined to be interviewed on the project but briefed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica. When asked to comment, Mr Kamikamica said Labasa would benefit from it.
“He has not only focused on his development but also on the construction of the bypass road,” Mr Kamikamica said.
“These are some of the outcomes of good governance, people deciding to invest in the country and lift the economy.
“The economy will be transformed over the next few years, because you’re starting to see more high investment in the North.”
The businessman has already begun preliminary work on the road and construction is expected to be completed in the coming months.
It’s understood the bypass will be located beside his ongoing industrial zone development at Vakamaisuasua.
