Lakeba Island was alive yesterday with the installation of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara as Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau, a ceremony rich in tradition and historical resonance.

The event, held at Tubou Village on the chiefly island of Lakeba, follows the earlier instalment of Ratu Tevita Mara as Tui Nayau on the neighbouring island of Nayau.

In his speech, Ratu Tevita called on the people of Lau to come together in unity and work with purpose to advance their communities, acknowledging that the titles he now holds come with deep cultural duty and collective obligation.

His installation is a powerful and emotional milestone in Fiji’s history, taking place 56 years after his late father, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, was installed as Tui Lau in 1969.
