The Indian community makes important contributions to Australian society, says Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald.

Speaking at the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI) 95th annual convention in Nadi last Friday, Mr McDonald said nearly one million people claim Indian ancestry in Australia and was the country’s fastest growing diaspora community.

“The diaspora community is active in all aspects of Australian life, including business, politics, judiciary, government, civil society, academia, science, the arts and, of course, sport.”

Mr McDonald said the theme of the convention – A United Sangam Towards our Century – was a testament to the organisation’s long history and inclusive contribution to Fijian society.

“Firstly, it reflects the upcoming anniversary of 100 years since TISI Sangam’s founding. What an incredible milestone.

“It also reflects the remarkable contribution that the organisation has made to the Fijian community over the last 98 years.

“Since it was founded in 1926, Sangam is now one of the biggest cultural and educational organisations in Fiji. It has both expanded and thrived.”

Mr McDonald said unity was at the core of TISI Sangam’s work.

“Its mission and vision are focused on uniting the people of Fiji, and helping communities address social and cultural challenges.

“In achieving its vision, I would like to acknowledge the contribution that TISI Sangam makes in educating the children of Fiji.

“I was impressed to learn that Sangam manages and funds 21 primary and five secondary schools in Fiji and these institutions cater for students of all religious beliefs and backgrounds.”
