Lynda Tabuya will remain a member of the Peoples Alliance Party, the part general secretary Sila Balawa has announced.
He states Ms Tabuya has undergone the party’s internal disciplinary hearings after a complaint was received against her when a video showing her dancing naked surfaced on social media.
“After due process, the Party has determined that the video was not intentionally published or released by Hon Tabuya and she did not intend to cause disrepute to the party,” said Mr Balawa.
“However, the fact remains that public figures like parliamentarians should understand that their private lives will be subject to public scrutiny.”
“As such, public figures and national leaders must always be mindful of this and take extra care to avoid such situations as has happened in this case.”
“Hon Tabuya maintains that the malicious distribution of the video was a deliberate attempt to discredit the Party. She has expressed deep regret for what has taken place.”
“She has apologised in writing to the Party and its members and has undertaken to safeguard against the repeat of such incidents.”
Mr Balawa added Ms Tabuya maintains that she has been a victim of a cybercrime and a gross invasion of her privacy and has reported the matter to police.
“The Party is aware of the police report and trusts that the police will be able to resolve the issue in due course.”
“Therefore, in the spirit of forgiveness, reconciliation and second chances, it has been agreed that Hon. Tabuya will remain an MP.”
“In regard to her demotion to the backbenches, the Party maintains its position that the membership of cabinet is the sole prerogative of the Prime Minister.”
“The Party considered her achievements as a minister and her history of service to the Party and the public in making its decision.”
