There has been an improvement in the literacy rate in the country according to an assessment conducted last year, according to Assistant Education Minister Iliesa Vanawalu.
The minister attributed this to the reintroduction of old initiatives that had been discarded by the previous government.
“So, we are back to base now,” Mr Vanawalu said.
He cited the case of Library Week which, after several years of neglect by the previous administration, had made a comeback.
“There was no celebration of Library Week for the past few years.
“So, after a lapse of many years, we get to celebrate it again.”
Mr Vanawalu said the renewed focus on libraries and their role in education had led to visible progress.
“For us, we can see the improvement on the ground, especially the literacy level,” he said, adding that access to library resources had positively impacted the students’ literacy levels.
“Now we can see the fruit of the work by allowing students to have library classes in Fiji.”
