The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has proposed a US$50billion plan to end the pandemic by vaccinating at least 40 per cent of people in every country by the end of this year.

IMF’s deputy managing director Tao Zhang made this known at the opening of the Forum Economic Ministers virtual meeting yesterday saying that ending the pandemic everywhere required further coordinated global actions.

“By mid-2022, we hope to have vaccinated  60 per cent of people in every country and the most urgent part of this plan is to redirect excess vaccine doses from advanced economies to the developing world,” Mr Zhang said.

“About one third of the plans, $35billion in grant financing have now been secured.

“But the work must continue to raise the rest. Second, beyond vaccines, ensuring sufficient financial support for weaker economies is essential.”

Mr Zhang said the IMF was committed to all of the important work to promote global cooperation.

“I can assure all of you that we will do our own part to the utmost.”
