The tragic killing of Dr Isireli Biumaitotoya, a Nadi-based medical professional and prominent transgender advocate, has drawn widespread grief and condemnation, with ILGA Oceania issuing a statement mourning his loss and calling for decisive action.

In a statement released today, the Co-Chairs of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association – Oceania (ILGA Oceania) said they were “deeply shocked and saddened” by the murder of Dr Isireli, who was also known online as Leighley Leli Darling.

“Leighley was a respected medical professional, a beloved member of our community, and a visible voice for many who are too often silenced,” the statement read.

“This is not only a personal tragedy, but also a moment that exposes the persistent transmisogyny and hate that our communities endure.”

“We are alarmed by the hateful commentary circulating online, which risks further emboldening violence and creating fear. Words of hate are not harmless—they create the conditions in which such violence becomes possible.”

ILGA Oceania called on authorities, including the Fiji Police Force and the Online Safety Commission, to act swiftly and responsibly by conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring justice is served, to publicly condemning transphobic violence and take stronger action against hate speech and online harassment.

The organisation also urged members of the public who witness online threats or hate speech to document and report such content to the authorities.

“This is a dark and painful time, but we will not allow hate to define us. Our communities are strong, resilient, and loved.”

ILGA Oceania encouraged those feeling unsafe or in mourning to reach out to local support organisations, trusted individuals, or contact police or other PIDSOGIESC+ networks in Fiji.
