ICAO opens office

The Pacific region’s aviation sector is very pivotal as our islands depend on reliable and efficient air transportation to connect globally, promote tourism and thrive economic growth.

This was highlighted by Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Minister for Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka during the opening of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Liaison Office in Nadi on Friday.

Mr Gavoka said the office signifies the region’s unwavering commitment to addressing unique challenges faced by our region and fostering sustainable development in aviation.

“I extend a special welcome to our chief guest- secretary general ICAO Juan Carlos Salazar, whose presence here underscores the importance of this initiative.

“Your support and participation are invaluable as we embark on this new chapter of collaboration and progress.”

He added that the establishment of ICAO regional office in Nadi was a testament to a shared resolve to improve aviation safety, security and sustainability.

“This office will serve as a hub for communication, technical support and capacity building to meet the Pacific needs for PSIDS.

“Additional the Pacific is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and it is imperative that our aviation practices are in line with global suitability goals.”

Mr Gavoka added that he was confident that the office would serve as a beacon of progress of collaboration and innovation.
