Ilona Valette stood quietly among the mourners at Nadi International Airport, her heart heavy as the casket of her partner, Josaia Wini Raisuqe, arrived home.

They had shared four years together; years filled with laughter, love, and dreams for the future.

“We were planning to do our house together,” she said softly.

The body of the former Fiji 7s representative was carried yesterday by members of the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team.

His mother, Mereani Raisuqe, wept as she cried out “Luvequ! Luvequ!” (my child), her voice echoing through the Nadi International Airport cargo building.

Ilona described Wini as a joyful person who lifted everyone around him.

“Being with Josh made me happy because he was always happy.

“Every day, he would laugh. That was just who he was,” she said.

Also present at the airport were Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) CEO Vanessa Kilner, sporting officials, fans, and families all gathered to welcome the late winger home one last time.

His body was later transported to Suva and will be laid to rest tomorrow in his village in Lutu, Naitasiri.

Raisuqe, 30, tragically lost his life on May 8 in a car crash in France, where he had been playing professional rugby. Known for his aggressive playing style and powerful runs, he rose to fame in the Fiji 7s team before moving to France, playing for clubs such as Stade Français and Nevers.

His death has shocked the rugby world, with messages of sorrow pouring in from former teammates, French clubs, and fans around the globe.

But for Ilona, it’s the quiet moments she will miss most.

“I still can’t believe this

“I miss his voice. I miss his laugh.”

Raisuqe will be laid to rest in Lutu, Naitasiri on Friday.
