Nadi businessman Abid Hussein claimed the amateur category at the 52nd GM Motors-sponsored Fiji Golf Open championship at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club on Sunday night.

He shot nine under par 208, ahead of Rajat Rai (219) who finished in second place.

New Zealand-based Anuresh Chandra finished third with 223.

Speaking on the tournament, Hussein said it was not easy to organise an event and acknowledged his playing partners Roneel Prakash, Zoheer Ahmed and Anasa Seruvatu.

“I also want to thank the international boys for coming out in good numbers for the tournament. There was a lot of things about golf which I learnt from them and I want to thank everyone who has supported me,” he said.

Hussein said it was a very successful tournament where he played some very good golf.

“Two weeks ago, I went to the Asian Amateur Championship in Australia where I learnt some good things about golf which was visible in my performance in this tournament.”

He said the wet weather luckily subsided on the final day for some good golf on display on the course.

“I am learning every day and the field was big in this tournament, I think 170 participants and a record number of overseas participants as well.”

Golf Fiji tournament director Rohit Chandra said the field was quite big for the three-day tournament with 150 participants.
