Humbling tale

WHAT a humbling story (FT 16/11) of our former prime minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who is pictured (FT 16/11), packing empty plastic bottles in a bag to be sold.

As the story goes (FT 16/11) he has been selling plastic bottles and coconuts to supplement his family’s income.

In collecting plastic bottles he is also doing nature a favour by collecting the bottles for recycling.

Good one.

Anyway, in the political upheaval of 1987 many people lost livelihood and property, some lost their lives and became destitute and had to be relocated.

All civil servants like me had a 20 per cent cut to our salary, which was never recovered.

But like many of us who earned about $12,000 per annum back then we lived within our means.

My wife and I didn’t tell anyone of our struggles, but we bounced back.

I was the sole breadwinner back then.

Anyway, I have left behind all the hardship and misery my wife and I and our small children suffered, and moved on with our lives. We bear no grudges, because it won’t change anything.

We have done pretty well, if I say so myself.

And yes sir, just like you “where there is a will there is a way”.
