Fiji’s hotel inventory is concentrated in the Coral Coast-Nadi-Denarau area, accounting for around 75 per cent of room inventory.

This, according to the final draft of Government’s 10-year National Sustainable Tourism Framework (NSTF) that was designed based on research, consultation process, and discussions held at the Fiji Tourism Convention in December 2023.

“There are more than 400 licensed accommodation providers in Fiji, but this figure underestimates the total number of accommodation providers. There are more than 500 Airbnb listings, for example. Fiji’s hotel inventory is concentrated in the Coral Coast-Nadi-Denarau area accounting for around 75 per cent of the room inventory,” NTSF reports.

“Denarau hotels hold more than 14 per cent of Fiji’s room inventory and include four out of five top largest resorts. A further 16 per cent is in Suva, catering largely to meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions (MICE), and business travellers.

“With the 25 biggest hotels accounting for 40 per cent of Fiji’s room inventory along the Nadi-Coral Coast belt, these big hotels have a large share of the ‘voice of the industry’ through the FHTA (Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association).”

The draft said most experiences and tours are located around this concentrated areas, and most tourism experiences offered are ocean-based, including sailing and snorkeling trips.

“Special interest travellers include scuba divers, surfers represent recognised high-end niche segments.

“There are more than 20 specialist surf resorts/operators, all of whom are SMEs (small, medium enterprises) and locally owned apart from Tavera.”

According to the Framework, there are 60 Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Scuba Schools International (SSI) registered scuba dive operators and training facilities throughout Fiji.
