A WEST-BASED company has expressed an interest in developing a hotel project at a vacant parcel of land situated between Blue Ginger restaurant and the Lautoka Methodist Coronation Church.
Lautoka City Council CEO Jone Nakauvadra said Challenge Engineering had tendered for a hotel development and the paperwork had been forwarded to the Local Government Ministry.
“The decision on this tender will be made by them,” he said.
“The site had been earmarked for development for some time.”
An organisation had expressed an interest in establishing a cultural centre, said Mr Nakauvadra, however, the property was re-tendered after the project failed to materialise.
Lautoka Residents & Ratepayers Association secretary Denise Gibson said any development involving parks or open spaces in the city should be made public before a decision was made.
“Lautoka is fast becoming a crowded city and fast losing its unique charm of beautiful trees, open spaces and cool flow of air,” she said.
