THE Extra Supermarket Battle of the Giants pool stage is set for a fierce contest after four of the Extra Premier League’s top-ranked teams were drawn together in Pool B.
The pools were drawn based on the standings after Round 14, which served as the qualifying round for the tournament.
In pool A are Labasa, Nasinu, Suva, Navua and in pool B are Ba, Rewa, Lautoka and Nadi.
Fiji Football Association chief executive Mohammed Yusuf described Pool B as the “pool of death”, with two teams set to exit the competition after the pool stage.
“Two top teams will exit the competition after pool games,” Yusuf said.
Pool B features teams ranked first, second, fourth and seventh in the Extra Premier League, setting up a demanding battle for the two semi-final places.
Yusuf said the strength of the pool means every match will carry the intensity of a final.
“The pool games in Pool B is like a final every day. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon, you will see a top-class battle between the top teams,” he said.
With only two teams able to progress from each pool, the margin for error will be small for the sides considered among the leading contenders.
Yusuf believes the draw could produce a high-quality tournament, with the strongest teams expected to face each other before the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the other pool is expected to provide a more evenly matched contest, giving teams there an opportunity to battle for the remaining semi-final places.
The Battle of the Giants will therefore provide an early test for the leading Extra Premier League sides, with Pool B likely to determine which contenders can handle the pressure and progress to the final stages.
The 2026 BOG will take place at the 4R Govind Park Stadium in Ba, September 4-6 for the knockout stages and September 12-13 for the finals.
