About 89 per cent of all HIV-positive tests recorded from January to June this year comprise members of the iTaukei community.

In addition, more men are being diagnosed with HIV.

This was shared by the Ministry of Health head of family health Dr Rachel Devi at the Fiji Institute of Medical Laboratory Services (FIMLS) annual convention in Sigatoka on Saturday, where she reiterated that HIV did not discriminate based on race, religion, or age.

She said the high percentage of iTaukei individuals testing positive might be influenced by several factors, one of which was the widespread frequency of awareness programs.

“Having said that, we do encourage everyone because HIV is no respecter of race, religion, age, et cetera,” she said.
