STUDENTS of Natabua High School were reminded yesterday of the importance of preserving history.

At the handover of The Fiji Times at 150 book, school principal Virendra Sharma acknowledged author Dr Anurag Subramani and The Fiji Times editor-in-chief Fred Wesley for presenting copies of the book to the school.

“The book itself allows us to appreciate the people who were there before us, our forefathers and those people who have made changes in Fiji,” Mr Sharma said.

“Many of you are ignorant of things that have transpired before us, you are not aware of things that happened 15 to 20 years ago. But remember, you have to look at the past; you have to look at history to shape our future.

“History does not only give us our mistakes to learn from, but also gives us the wisdom to go forward.”

Wesley said the book “is a history of Fiji taken through the lens of The Fiji Times”.

“The Fiji Times started in 1869 on September 4, and we have come through so many challenges over the years that a lot of you may not be aware of,” he said.

“And as the principal has said, history is very important for all of us.

“We need to be looking back to chart our path forward, to understand and appreciate the mistakes and the challenges we have faced and what we can do to overcome them moving forward.”
