THE McDonald’s Fijian Drua women’s team will make history on Saturday when they host the Super Rugby Women’s final on home soil for the first time, with chief executive Jeff Miller calling it a defining moment for women’s rugby in Fiji.
The Drua women will host the New South Wales Waratahs at the 4R Stadium, Govind Park stadium in Ba.
Miller said the occasion is much bigger than a rugby match.
“It’s enormous,” Miller said.
“It’s a great thing for the women firstly, and they deserve it because they’ve worked really hard throughout this campaign. They’ve continued to improve every week and they deserve this opportunity.”
He said hosting the final would showcase Fiji on the international stage.
“This is going to be shown throughout Australia, New Zealand and the world for that matter. To host the final here for the very first time is very special.”
Miller said taking the match to Lautoka reflected the strong support Drua had received in the west this season.
“The games we’ve had this year have been just as successful for both men and women and sharing matches around helps us build more supporters.”
He urged fans to pack the Govind park and create the atmosphere that has made the Drua home matches difficult for visiting teams.
“When we get that support behind us, whether it’s in Lautoka, Suva or Ba, it makes a big difference. It contributes to the team’s performance.”
The Fijian Drua women will face the NSW Waratahs women this Saturday, July 25 at the 4R Govind Park stadium in Ba at 1.05pm.
