A high-speed car chase through the streets of Suva, two terrified children, a police officer and a quick-thinking taxi driver!
What a night!
What started out as a routine Thursday evening took a dramatic twist for a taxi driver who found himself as the focal point of a high-speed chase.
Opting to remain anonymous, the taxi driver reflected on how the night unfolded.
At around 8pm along Victoria Pde, outside the ANZ Bank, he saw three men jump into a woman’s car and speed off with her two young children still in the back seat.
A police officer on beat patrol saw him give chase, and got into his taxi.
With two other passengers already in his taxi, the driver tailed the car through the streets of Suva.
He described the dramatic turn of events, and how he eventually blocked the vehicle at a dead-end street, forcing the carjackers to escape on foot.
Inside the car, the driver found the two girls in tears.
Reflecting on the night’s events, he said: “I thank God for placing me there at the right time. When we’re able to help, it’s not by accident.”
The chase lasted about 20 minutes, ending with the safe return of the children to their family.
Police have praised the taxi driver’s bravery and swift action, crediting him with preventing what could have been a far worse outcome.
Such moments remind us about the human spirit.
They reflect courage, and a commitment to do the right thing.
The taxi driver stands out as a beacon of hope, stepping up to fight crime and protect the community.
We have always said that the police can’t work alone. The force needs the assistance of members of the public to fight crime.
It is the way to go.
The real challenge though is on how we can assist the force to keep us all safe.
Today, a family is thankful for the safe return of their loved ones.
Who knows what could have happened!
We now look up to the long arm of the law to get to the bottom of this, and to appropriately deal with the carjackers!
We need to feel safe and secure in our towns and cities. We need to be assured that such incidents are isolated, and when they do happen, the law will come down hard on those who threaten our lives, and our safety!
It is fortunate no one was injured, and there were no accidents along the way!
Such risky behaviour must never be tolerated!
People who are prepared to do this, for whatever reason, must face serious consequences!
We acknowledge the taxi driver and police officer for their courage in the face of great danger!
