Heavy rain, thunderstorms expected across Fiji

A trough of low pressure affecting the Fiji group is expected to bring widespread showers, isolated thunderstorms and the risk of flash flooding across the country today and into Sunday.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service weather bulletin issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 5.30am today, occasional showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast over most parts of Fiji.

The weather office warned that isolated heavy falls are likely, with localised and persistent downpours expected to trigger flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Moderate easterly winds are expected, gradually shifting east to northeast later today, while seas will remain moderate.

The outlook for Sunday indicates worsening conditions, with occasional rain, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms forecast around the country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said localised heavy rainfall could again lead to flash flooding in vulnerable areas, while moderate to fresh north to northwest winds are expected, becoming gusty during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Authorities are advising the public, particularly those living in flood-prone communities, to remain alert and monitor the latest weather updates.
