Heavy rainfall continues to be a major cause of water disruptions across the Lami area, with increased sediment and debris affecting operations at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant.
Speaking at the Lami Women’s Forum held at the Yatu Lau Hotel on Tuesday, Water Authority of Fiji Team Leader Stakeholder Engagement Alisi Senikuta said heavy rain increased turbidity levels in raw water sources, leading to intake blockages and reduced treatment output.
She said the Tamavua, Suva, Lami and Togalevu water system currently produced around 60 million litres of water daily against a demand of 70 million litres, leaving a supply gap of about 15 million litres each day.
Ms Senikuta said the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant, originally designed to operate at 60 million litres per day, was currently producing about 75 million litres daily to meet growing demand.
She said water was essential for daily life, including drinking, cooking, bathing and sanitation.
Measures already implemented include the installation of a trash boom system at Savura Cascade, bypass pumping systems and improved chemical treatment processes.
