Heavy rain alert remains in force across Fiji

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the entire Fiji group as a slow-moving trough of low pressure continues to bring widespread rain and the threat of flash flooding across the country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said the associated cloud and rain bands are expected to affect the country until later Tuesday.

Forecasters said a northwest to northeast wind flow currently prevails over Fiji, contributing to unstable weather conditions.

In its latest bulletin, the weather office forecast occasional rain over most parts of the country until midnight tonight, with isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls expected.

Authorities warned that localised and persistent heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Moderate northwest to northeast winds are expected, becoming fresh at times, while seas are forecast to remain moderate to rough.

The outlook for Tuesday indicates occasional rain will continue over Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

The weather office has again warned that heavy falls in affected areas could trigger flash flooding.

Members of the public are being advised to remain vigilant, monitor weather updates and take precautions, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding.
