The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain alert for the entire Fiji Group as an active trough of low pressure moves towards the country.

In a Special Weather Bulletin issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 10.30am today, forecasters said the weather system, currently located north of Fiji, is expected to affect the country from tomorrow through to later on Wednesday.

According to the bulletin, cloudy periods and showers are expected over most parts of the country, with rain developing from the northwest tomorrow before becoming frequent and heavy.

“Rain developing from the northwest tomorrow, becoming frequent and heavy with squally thunderstorms, before spreading to the rest of the country later in the day,” the bulletin stated.

Authorities are warning members of the public to be prepared for possible flash flooding, particularly in flood-prone and low-lying areas.

The weather office said heavy rainfall could result in “flash flooding of flood-prone, low-lying informal settlements/communities, businesses and Irish crossings leading to traffic disruptions.”

Urban areas with poor drainage may also experience surface flooding, while motorists are being urged to exercise caution due to wet roads and poor visibility during periods of heavy rain.

The Fiji Meteorological Service is advising the public to stay updated with the latest weather information and heed warnings issued by relevant authorities as the weather system approaches.
