The Speaker of Parliament was asked by National Federation Party leader Prof Biman Prasad to tell the Prime Minister not to use the word “shut up” in Parliament.

Prof Prasad stood on a point of order during the budget debate on Tuesday evening when Minister for Infrastructure, Meteorological Services, Lands and Mineral Resources, Jone Usamate was speaking.

“The Prime Minister cannot shout and say shut up,” Prof Prasad said.

“He was saying to me, ‘shut up’. Do not use the words ‘shut up’.”

Through a chorus of interjections, Prof Prasad stated “you are not the Speaker, Prime Minister. I listen to the Speaker”. Speaker of the House Ratu Epeli Nailatikau asked Prof Prasad to take his seat.

“Honorable Member, take your seat, take your seat,” he said.

“You have got to be able to take it here on the chin and give it, that is what you have to be able to do here.

“Some of you do it, some of you take it, some of you do not, which is simple as that.”
