A MAJOR harvesting gang rationalisation exercise will be carried out by sugar industry stakeholders in all sectors at the beginning of next month.

In a statement, Sugar Industry Tribunal registrar Tim Brown said the rationalisation had become more urgent and necessary with the increase in mechanical harvesting machines and the operation of mechanical harvesters.

“The introduction of mechanical harvesters has been of great assistance to the Fiji sugar industry, however, in many cases after the formation of the mechanical harvesting gang, a few growers are left out as their farms are on the hills,” he said.
