The National President of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam), Parveen Bala is urging reflection on the nation’s shared heritage and a renewed commitment to unity.
Mr. Bala described Diwali as “a universal beacon, celebrating the eternal triumph of Light over Darkness, Good over Evil, and Knowledge over Ignorance.”
He drew a powerful connection between the festival’s symbolism and the history of the Indo-Fijian community, paying homage to the Girmitiyas—the indentured labourers who arrived from India.
“Our forefathers arrived in Fiji with hope and hardship, and their legacy lives on today through the pillars of Sangam – our educational institutions, our temples, and our wide-ranging community services,” he said.
Calling for civic responsibility, Mr. Bala added, “let us honour their vision this Diwali by reaffirming our commitment to nation-building and fostering a future that is inclusive, compassionate, and forward-looking.”
The Sangam President also emphasized the contemporary relevance of the simple act of lighting the Diwali lamp, linking it to the broader Fijian identity.
“As we light our diyas (lamps), we are not just lighting our homes, but we are igniting the flame of unity and the resilience of the Fijian spirit,” he remarked.
He encouraged citizens to use the occasion to “strengthen the bonds with our families, friends, and neighbours of all communities, demonstrating the warmth and harmony that make Fiji truly special.”
