Social Innovation Fiji (SIF) donated library books to the village of Vitogo in Lautoka on Monday.

The foundation is made up of Japanese university and high school students based in Lautoka working on projects to combat social problems in communities.

Foundation director Akifumi Kawakami said the group was commitment to addressing social problems in local communities through innovative solutions.

“Our organisation’s main goal is to solve social issues in the country, and now our target is an environmental program focusing on rubbish,” Mr Kawakami said.

The donation project, he  said, was led by one of the students who purchased second-hand books for the village library.

“The idea is to encourage a book exchange system where villagers can bring books they’ve read and swap them for new ones.

“This will prevent people from burning or throwing away books as rubbish, promoting recycling instead.”

Villager Reijieli Nasilasila expressed gratitude for the donation, saying the books would be a valuable resource for their children’s education.
