Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Jovesa Vocea says the electricity grid will be extended from Korotari to the district of Wairiki this year.

Mr Vocea said this expansion would include the installation of electricity poles in designated areas of the district, a move that will benefit local communities.

“The decision was made, and Energy Fiji Limited has notified my office about the extension,” he said.

However, Mr Vocea said he had raised concerns over the current electricity supply, which stops at Navatu Secondary School.

“We’ve been working on this for some time, and I’ve raised concerns with Energy Fiji Limited.

“I had hoped more areas would be covered, but as of now, the extension is set to reach only part of Wairiki.”

Mr Vocea said there was a need for traditional leaders to push for further assistance because without strong advocacy, the Government would not be able to provide the necessary support to the villages in need.

“Without the support of local leadership, efforts to improve infrastructure and services would be limited.”

Mr Vocea said there had been an outcry from the community for further support, particularly in remote villages that have been struggling with basic services.

“We are not sitting idly in the office.

“We are constantly exchanging ideas and looking for ways to assist these communities.

“We continue to push for more assistance to reach these villages where there is a genuine need for assistance, and we are aware of the challenges they face.”
