GOVERNMENT will ensure Fijians living overseas will participate in the national referendum on December 9.

Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga said there was about 12,000 Fijians overseas.

“This will involve everyone registered with the Fijian Elections Office. I understand there is like 12,000 who are living overseas,” he said.

“That is the estimate of the number of people who are living overseas.

“So we want to improve on that and focus on our diaspora.”

He said a confirmation on an established number of eligible Fijians participating in the referendum will be finalised at the end of October.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that December 9, 2026, is when the national referendum will be held.

Following presidential assent to the National Referendum Act, Fijians will vote on whether to adopt a new Constitution or keep the 2013 version.

Mr Rabuka also called for suspending general election campaigning to ensure focus.
