RURAL communities will need stronger water storage and climate-resilient infrastructure as the Government prepares for droughts and other climate-related challenges, Parliament was told yesterday.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Mosese Bulitavu said the Government would expand its focus beyond providing immediate water assistance and strengthen the resilience of communities facing recurring water shortages.
He said the High-Risk Water and Sanitation Program played an important role in helping communities prepare for the impacts of drought and other climate-related events.
“The program also plays an important role in helping communities prepare for droughts and other climate-related challenges,” Mr Bulitavu said.
He said future interventions would include increasing rainwater harvesting and water storage capacity, particularly in communities vulnerable to water shortages.
Mr Bulitavu said access to reliable water and sanitation was not simply an infrastructure issue but directly affected the wellbeing of vulnerable members of rural and maritime communities.
