THE Government has held back paternity leave because of issues raised by employers.

The mediator for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Tomasi Keni, made the revelation at a public consultation on the national minimum wage review in Lautoka yesterday after Fiji Sugar Corporation OHS chairman Vimal Sharma raised the issue of the lack of paternity leave for fathers.

The five-day paternity leave introduced by the FijiFirst government in January 2019, was re-duced to two days in May 2020 under the Employment Relations (Amendment) Act 2020.

Currently, there is zero paternity leave for new fathers.

Mr Sharma also questioned the criteria for calculating the national minimum wage.
