THE Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources has completed a comprehensive physical survey of the Sawakasa mahogany plantation lease – marking the end of a four-year project from the 2022/2023 financial year through to 2025/2026.

The completion of this survey also marks a major milestone that is anticipated to unlock smoother harvesting and greater returns for landowners.

The mahogany lease covers 16 lots spanning 4128 hectares of prime mahogany plantation.

Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo said their surveyors had accurately marked every boundary on the ground, including in rugged terrain, across rivers and deep in remote bush areas. He said this clear, accurate survey would deliver real benefits, including: faster and easier harvesting with plantation managers now having precise boundaries; stronger returns for landowners since reliable land records meant better lease administration, smoother operations and higher long-term value; and greater confidence for investment because clear tenure attracted responsible partners.

Mr Vosarogo said with the field work done, the project would now move quickly to final survey plans, technical checks, and official registration.

He said this achievement supported the Government’s new mahogany legislation and broader reforms aimed at improving transparency, good governance and maximum benefits for landowners and the nation.

“Survey work on rugged and sometimes merciless terrains can dampen spirits of even the toughest character. They surveyors and the survey team carry equipment over harsh contours, cross rivers and weather the storms miles away from home for weeks on end,” Mr Vosarogo said in a statement from the ministry.

“I am proud the men and women of the ministry have been able to complete this arduous work that sets the platform for the harvesting.” Mr Vosarogo said the ministry was fully committed to delivering quality land services that would drive sustainable development and real economic benefits for all Fijians.
