The Government has cancelled the 2026 Civil Service Day celebrations, citing ongoing global challenges and the need to remain focused on essential public service delivery.

In a circular dated June 18, 2026, Permanent Secretary for Civil Service Pita Tagicakirewa informed all Permanent Secretaries that the annual event would not be held this year.

“All Ministries are hereby informed that the Civil Service Day celebration for 2026 will not be held,” the circular states.

The decision was made in light of what the Government described as continuing crises and challenges around the world that require careful management of resources.

“This decision has been made in view of the ongoing crises and challenges being experienced around the world, which require continued prudence, responsibility, and focus on essential public service delivery,” Tagicakirewa said.

While acknowledging the significance of Civil Service Day as an opportunity to honour public servants, the Government said it was important to remain mindful of current global conditions.

“While Civil Service Day is an important occasion to recognise the dedication, commitment, and contribution of civil servants, it is equally important that we remain mindful of the current global situation and ensure that resources are used responsibly.”

The circular stressed that the cancellation should not be interpreted as diminishing the Government’s appreciation for civil servants.

“The Government acknowledges and appreciates the hard work, resilience, and service of all civil servants. Your continued commitment to serving the people is highly valued.”

All ministries and departments have been directed to communicate the decision to staff and ensure they take note of the cancellation.

The annual Civil Service Day celebrations are traditionally held to recognise the contribution of public servants and promote excellence within Fiji’s public service. This year’s event will not proceed as the Government prioritises service delivery and prudent resource management amid a challenging global environment.
