The Government has activated a contingency plan to ensure school children in Taveuni continue to have access to transport after bus services stopped today.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, says the Land Transport Authority has developed an operational mitigation strategy to mobilise licensed carriers and minibuses where needed, with temporary operating approvals to maintain affected school bus routes.
He says Government has also strengthened coordination with the Ministry of Education, the Fiji Police Force, Provincial Administration, school management committees, licensed carriers and transport operators to support the implementation of the contingency arrangements.
According to the Minister, daily monitoring, compliance inspections and operational reporting will be carried out throughout the activation period to ensure services remain safe, reliable and effective.
The Ministry of Education is also facilitating the release of transport vouchers to schools in Taveuni, while divisional officials continue working with education authorities and local stakeholders to minimise disruption for students and parents.
Ro Filipe has urged parents and guardians to remain calm, assuring them that Government agencies are closely monitoring the situation and are working to maintain essential transport services across the island.
