Golfers eye gold medals win in Vanuatu mini games

FIJIAN golfers are confident of winning gold medals in the individual events in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, says Team Fiji golf manager, Nagel Goundon.

“There was a requirement for the team to have two junior and two senior golfers in the men’s and women’s categories,” he said.

“We have prepared very well, especially the men’s team which competed in an overseas competition and Abid Hussain was part of the Vanuatu Open which consisted of seven players and he finished second.”

Golfers who will represent Fiji are Merelita McCarthy, Ufemia Naisara, Dawi Jee and Raina Kumar in the women’s category, while Wonu Hwang, Ryan Kumar, Abid Hussain, and Olaf Alan Jr will represent Fiji in the men’s category.

“We have a high chance to win in the individual events and we can win a gold medal.

“There are high expectations for us to win.

“In the team event, we will try our level best to win the competition for a gold medal since we will be playing with the juniors and we will give our best against the top competitors.

“There are a lot of expectations from the golfers.”

The team departs tomorrow.
