DRASA Avenue Primary School Class 6 student, 11-year-old Arohan Hazarika Gogoi, is preparing for a milestone moment as he gears up to represent his school at the All-Intermediate Schools (AIMS) Games in New Zealand from September 7–11.
The prestigious event, which runs over three weeks, is expected to bring together more than 10,000 primary school athletes from New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji.
For Drasa Avenue Primary, Arohan’s selection marks a historic first in badminton, with the young student becoming the school’s pioneer representative at the international competition.
Arohan, who travels every Saturday to Nadi Muslim College for training, says preparation has been both challenging and enjoyable as he balances school and sport with only a few months left before departure.
“I feel happy, I’m kind of nervous,” he said when asked about representing his school at the international level.
Arohan developed his interest in badminton through regular participation in local competitions and club games, and says he enjoys the sport because of its competitive nature.
“Yeah, it’s fun. I like competing against others,” he said.
Although this will be his first appearance at a major international tournament, Arohan is no stranger to sport, having represented in karate where he holds a blue belt, and competing in chess tournaments for the past five years.
Originally from India and now based in Lautoka, he credits his parents for their strong support, particularly in ensuring he attends weekly training sessions in Nadi.
“That is how my parents really encourage me and take me to Nadi every Saturday for training,” he said.
Fiji Badminton president Abel Cane said Arohan’s selection reflects the growing development of the sport at grassroots level in Fiji.
He said the AIMS Games is one of the largest primary school sporting events globally, featuring U13 athletes from across New Zealand, Australia and Fiji.
Cane added that Drasa Avenue now joins other Fijian schools participating at the event, including St Anne’s School and Gospel Primary School.
He also noted that Arohan will be among the few Fijian badminton representatives at the games, highlighting the significance of his inclusion at such a young age.
