God-gifted talent

Adding to the despondency already voiced in this column, it is disheartening to fathom that our national 7s heroes and the most outstanding coach in the world in my books, were not accordingly merited.

Our ardent contributors to this column have previously highlighted the vast chasm between the island and tier one rugby nations in terms of resources, finance and technology which already sets us apart. However, on the field of 7s no amount of resources, finance and technology can bridge the gap of god-gifted talent and someone who had the vision and understanding to nurture it and elevate our nation to a pinnacle where we stand alone.

The awards received for team of the year, sevens player of the year and coach of the year 2016 would last a year, but the experience of our national 7s coach and gladiators would be engraved in the echelons of immortality as the first 7s golden team at the Olympic Games which has its history dating back to 776BC.
