HINDI remains an integral part of the lives of Fijians of Indian descent.
This was the sentiment shared by University of Fiji acting vice chancellor Professor Narendra Reddy while marking Hindi Day today.
“In Fiji, we speak two versions of Hindi – the standard Hindi language and the Fiji Hindi,” Mr Reddy said.
“I feel we should give more importance to our Fiji Hindi, even in schools we are taught standard Hindi but we are losing our mother-tongue Fiji Hindi.”
He said the Department of Language, Literature and Communications of School of Humanities and Arts at UniFiji was offering undergraduate Hindi programs.
According to Prof Reddy, masters level courses in Hindi would also be offered from the first semester next year.
