Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka is demanding answers over the recent death of an eight-year-old Australian who was holidaying with his family at a resort in Nadi.

Police had said the little boy was found motionless near a flower garden and raised the alarm.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by doctors at the Nadi Hospital.

Mr Gavoka said he was deeply saddened by the incident.

“I think Tourism Fiji has also conveyed their condolences to the family,” he said.

Mr Gavoka said safety was always paramount in Fiji and the resort where the incident happened was a global chain with stringent safety systems in place.

“So, I really would like to know what actually happened because this is part of a big chain of hotels and they are very particular with what is happening with members of the public.

“I was part of the tourism industry and they had people who looked after kids.

“I really want to know what happened because this is really sad.”

Mr Gavoka said while people had high confidence in hotels in Fiji because of the very high standards of safety they observed, the incident raised a lot of questions.

“But I will keep saying it, I really want to know what really happened and this is unheard of.

“I think in all my years in the tourism industry, this is the first time I’ve seen something like this.”

Police have not responded to queries on the matter.
