Despite being newcomers to the Pherrus Trophy Schoolgirls Rugby League competition, the Jasper Williams High School under-19 side proved their worth on Saturday when they thumped St Thomas High School 24-4 in their opening match in Lautoka.

Team manager Kelera Kalou expressed her satisfaction with the girls’ performance, especially considering it was their first time participating in rugby league.

She believes the girls have immense talent and potential, and she is hopeful that they will continue to excel throughout the season.

“What we have seen with the girls is the talent that they have, and we’d like to excel in those areas, especially when we have seen that rugby has opened a lot of doors for young female athletes,” Kalou said.

“The school is proud of the girls’ accomplishments in their fi rst game and will see it as a promising start to the season.”

Although there are areas that need improvement and weaknesses to address, the coach is already working on these aspects with the team.

“The team is optimistic about the upcoming matches and is confident that they will continue to perform well,” she said.

The team is determined to work hard, overcome their challenges, and ultimately, bring the tournament victory back to the West.

Meanwhile, the Southeastern Schoolgirls round one of the competition will kick off this Saturday.
