FEBRUARY 14 is a special day for lovers across the world.
And lovers always find ways to show their loved ones that they care about them.
Valentine’s Day will remain a popular gift-giving event.
However, the Consumer Council of Fiji says this is a “real money-maker for businesses” even when consumers are frugal with their budgets.
“People choose to spend on that perfect gift that fits their budget. This can be flowers, jewellery, clothing, cosmetics, perfumes, an evening out or simply a greeting card,” the council says.
However, the council is urging consumers to be mindful of the special giveaways and promotions going on in towns/cities.
“Traders are found using music, lights and red decorations to lure consumers to make the most of the deals on offer.
“Consumers are advised not to fall under the spell and be driven by emotions, because this special day is not necessarily about a high cost romance extravaganza. Here are some useful tips from the council:
* Look out for advertisements that seem too good to be true. There will be so many gift ideas floating around, which should not trap you. Consumers must go for quality and practicality instead of the sweet deals;
* While it is a tradition to gift roses to your loved ones, you may consider going contemporary. Gifting a bouquet made out of locally-grown flowers, which is affordable, would be a good start of the day;
* We are a nation where NCDs is on rise. Hence, you may consider gifting fruits or healthy bars instead of chocolates to your loved one;
* If you can, make your own cards to express your love;
* Instead of going out to dine, you can prepare home-cooked meals; and
* If you are buying gifts online, you must be vigilant so that you are not hoodwinked. The council says consumers must use a web site address that begins with “https:” instead of “http:” and has a padlock sign on it.
