THREE schools in the Naitasiri highlands were recipients of school desks, chairs, sporting equipment and rugs from a school in Hong Kong.
The equipment was brought in a 40-foot container and delivered to schools in Delailasakau, Waidina and Nabukaluka in Naitasiri last Friday.
The gift was made possible through a global networking multipurpose liner services company Swire Shipping, which opened its office in Fiji early this year.
According to the company representative Chris De Villiers, the equipment worth $30,000 was given by Hong Kong International School.
“Swire Shipping in conjunction with our office in Hong Kong was able to facilitate and pack it in Hong Kong and ship it to Fiji and deliver it to the needy schools that were identified by the Ministry of Education,” he said.
“The cost of the uniforms, desks, chairs, and sporting equipment comes to about $F10,000 per school.
“Of course from Swire perspective we don’t see it as cost, we hope it gets used for improving the conditions in the school and from what we’ve seen the equipment will get used very well.”
Nabukaluka District School head teacher Aporosa Bole welcomed the gift which couldn’t have come at a better time.
“About 95 per cent of the parents of the school children are farmers and it’s very hard when we want to fundraise for such equipment. This gift is very timely,” he said.
Naitavuni Catholic School and Waidina Secondary School were the other two schools which received the gift.
