The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) or Bose Levu Vakaturaga will serve as a parallel institution to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere where he could seek advice on any matters of interest to Fijians.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted this while sharing his views about the GCC during a media conference on the chiefly island of Bau in Tailevu yesterday.

He said he hoped the two-day meeting would be a fruitful one and that they would consider the issues raised by the president of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma, Reverend Ili Vunisuwai.

As he led the devotion, Mr Vunisuwai urged chiefs to consider the needs of the iTaukei people who were living in poverty.

“The GCC is always at the heart of chiefs and the iTaukei people,” Mr Rabuka said.

“We hope they will come up with what is at the interest of Fijians.”

He said Ratu Wiliame was the front of wisdom, honour, mercy and authority.

“In this case, he has a parallel institution to be comforted by and when decisions come in from government.

“The advice of the GCC are in harmony with the interest and betterment of all people in Fiji.”
