SODELPA leader Aseri Radrodro says Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka is bound by the supreme authority of the party which is the general assembly.

Responding to Mr Gavoka’s concerns about a general assembly meeting that decided the party oppose Constitutional Amendment Bill 32, Mr Radrodro said he was also bound by the general assembly which made its position clear during the party’s special general meeting on October 24.

Mr Gavoka has called on the party to reconsider its stand.

The Education Minister said he would speak to the DPM to lobby for the party’s concerns about the draft Bill.

“I will encourage him to utilise (Mr Gavoka’s) unique position being a member of the Special Committee and lobby them on the pertinent issues that is stopping SODELPA from supporting the Bill in its current form,” he said.

“He could be helpful that way and SODELPA will be grateful for his input to enable SODELPA to deliver according to the wishes of its members and citizens of Fiji who have publicly shared similar sentiments.

“This is a defining moment for Fiji that should unite us rather than divide or polarise us and SODELPA will always listen to the voices of our people.”

He said this must not be an election promise exercise but must be one in which every citizen’s voice was considered.

According to the party’s Constitution, the general assembly is formed by members who pay the annual subscription fee of $2 and is open to all Fiji citizens including overseas members.

It says the supreme authority of the party is vested in the general assembly which meets at certain times annually under the chairpersonship of the party president Ratu Filimoni Soqeta or any of the vice presidents in the absence of the president.
