Update: 5:04PM YOUTHS of Nukuloa and Levuka-i-Gau villages in Gau were rewarded with a $20,000 fibre glass boat and fishing equipment from the Government to assist in their growing fishing business.
While talking to the youths at the one year anniversary celebration for Gau Fishermen’s Association at Navukailagi village this week, Acting Minister for Fisheries and Minister for Forests Osea Naiqamu said the “Gau e Loma fishermen’s group” has proven that rural fishermen can learn and implement the proper way of business record.
“They have also proven that the training conducted on the island by fisheries officers last year has helped them rake in good revenue within a year, boosting their financial status,” he said.
Mr Naiqamu also presented the fisherman of the year prize to 28 year old Taito Tikoimaleya of Qarani village.
Tikoimaleya had managed to rake in $35,000 in one year from the sale of his fish to markets in Suva and to Agro Marketing Authority in Nausori.
